Top 3 Comedy Videos on YouTube

Posted by on Jul 11, 2012 in Blog | 0 comments

We all know that YouTube can be a great marketing tool, be it for your business or simply for yourself. Music careers have been launched, Internet stars have been born, and people have made loads of money off of a long list of videos, from simple home videos to full production YouTube series. In this article, I’m going to discuss the three most viewed YouTube videos in the Comedy category (as of today, July 11, 2012).

Charlie Bit My Finger – again !

Fast facts

First aired: May 22, 2007
Run time: 56 seconds
Starring: Two English brothers, 3 and 1 years old
Views (to date): 465,297,317

What this video did right

  • It’s short – less than a minute long. These days, it seems like no one has a very long attention span, so the timing is right.
  • It has the cute kid/baby factor – who doesn’t like to see a couple of cute kids doing something adorable? Especially when one of the cute kids has an even more adorable accent?
  • They extended the popular video with iPhone/Android apps – everyone loves a good app; what better way to drive up the popularity of a YouTube sensation than creating its own app? And how handy is it that you can access those apps for download right there on the video? They apparently even have their own blog and video series!

Tootin’ Bathtub Baby Cousins – Official

Fast Facts

First aired: September 24, 2007
Run time: 36 seconds
Starring: Two unidentified baby heads in a cartoonish setting
Views (to date): 244,468,370

What this video did right

  • Again, it’s short, this one barely more than 30 seconds.
  • This one also has the cute baby factor.
  • They utilized the popular practice of pasting the picture of someone’s head on a another body, which always makes some major laughs.
  • Fart jokes. Who doesn’t like a good flatulence funny?
  • Catchy tune – love it or hate it, a memorable song can easily get stuck in your head, and when someone overhears you singing about not going number two in the tub, they might just ask where the heck you heard that.

Evolution of Dance – By Judson Laipply

Fast Facts

First aired: April 6, 2006
Run time: 6 minutes, 1 second
Starring: Judson Laipply, a motivational speaker and dancer
Views (to date): 198,546,902

What this video did right

  • It utilized the nostalgia factor – it affects people of all ages because it spans across so many generations of music and dance. I might not have laughed as hard at “The Twist”, but I couldn’t help but crack up when he broke out some MC Hammer moves (I desperately tried to do the same as a child but always failed miserably). The “What is Love” dance? My husband and I STILL do that in the car…to our kids’ dismay.
  • He added popups throughout the video for more information. The ever popular “But wait, there’s more!” tactic works so well.
  • Even though this video is rather long at 6:01 minutes, it keeps you watching because you keep asking – what is he going to do next?

What do you think? Do these three videos deserve their top spots? What do YOU think they did right or wrong?
